Changed the rating value, then changed it back.

The Unfairness rating here was initially set to 4, was changed to 3 during reprints for replacement cards, and then reset to 4 after a review of all changes in the most recent printing. You may already have a card with value 4 for this reason.

The reverse of the card now mentions that Mesmerism tokens are used with this theme pack.

Card rule replaced.

Previously "When you demolish an upgrade in a competitor's park, gain coins equal to its marked coin price."

The rule itself isn't a problem, but it does mean that this Showcase card depends on aggressive play to provide value, so it wasn't a popular choice to build.

The new revision produces value without aggressive play, based around the staff member focus of the Vampire pack.

Thanks to Jared Tannahill for the rule suggestion.

Night-time Opening

City - Funfair

Illustration: Mr Cuddington

Theme:Quantity

Notes

Thematically, opening at night gives a chance to make exactly the same income as you would during the day, but also requires paying overtime to your staff or they will quit.

+Alien Influence

The Alien theme pack describes the Alien Influence produced by upgrades marked with an Alien Influence symbol as "income", and consequently it is doubled by Night-Time Opening.

Notes

The star total of your park represents people attracted to visit the park. Capacity is the limit of how many of those people will fit and become guests.

For example, if your park had 21 stars in total, that means normally 21 people would like to enter the park. If your park has a capacity of 15 then when they arrive, 6 of them will be turned away and 15 of them are allowed to enter and become guests.

In this example, Stormy Weather means 11 people stay home because of the rain, and only 10 try to enter (half of 21, rounded down).

All 10 are permitted because 10 is within the capacity of the park. Once they are in the park, they're guests.

+ Sponsorship Deal

Sponsorship Deal pays +1 coin for each guest, so it must be applied after Stormy Weather has adjusted the star total of the park so that you can work out the number of guests.

In the example above, 10 guests enter the park during the bad weather, and Sponsorship Deal pays +1 coin for each, giving an income of 20 coins instead of 10.

Added Ticket symbol.

Originally, the Ticket symbol was meant to mark only those Guests step rules that produced money (hence the coin on the ticket). However, since there are only a couple of rules that occur in the Guests step that don't produce money, the distinction wasn't clear. The Ticket is now consistently a reminder marker for Guests step effects.

Anonymous Complaint: adjusted for clarity.

Previously "close all ride attractions", now limited to "a type of ride attraction".

The original effect proved to be a bit more harsh than some players expected (especially those who built all-ride parks).

The new effect is limited to one type of ride attraction, without saying specifically "thrill ride" or "leisure ride", which means it can expand to work with future theme packs that include other types of rides without needing to be changed again.

Project Management

This event offers two separate options, each of which is optional. You can choose to use only one, or the other, or both.

This means it is possible to discard a blueprint if you wish, without being forced to take another.

Updates

ShowHide

Original printings of this card have a small variation in the wording of Project Management. It was previously written as:

  • "You may draw three Blueprint cards and choose one to keep. You may discard a Blueprint card you own."

Please use this wording, from the current version of the card, if there is any dispute about the intention:

  • "You may draw up to three Blueprint cards then choose one to keep. You may discard a blueprint you own."

The change to the first sentence allows the card to still be useful in the case when the Blueprint deck has fewer than three cards remaining. This was the intended functioning of the card, and wasn't expressed precisely enough in the original printing.

The change to the second sentence doesn't change the meaning. The wording was adjusted to bring it into the line with improvements in the wording guidelines for card rules.

Renovation

The effect doesn't stack with itself. You don't get half of half price if you play two copies of Renovation at once. This is because each one gives a discount based on the marked coin price, which is the number printed on the blue price tag on the card.

If you play two copies, you simply have two different ways to get half price.

The same goes for other effects that give half price. You can have multiple ways of accessing half price builds, through different abilities such as Building Contractor, but they can't be combined together.

The half-price discount only applies to cards that are priced in coins. Prices marked in Alien Influence or any other currency are not reduced.

You can use Renovation on any of your closed attractions, no matter how they came to be closed, whether it be through the event itself, another event played by a competitor, a City event card, etc.  The pin symbol and the wording makes Renovation an enduring effect throughout the entire round. Whenever you build an upgrade, if the attraction is closed, you can build on it for half the marked coin price.

Celebrity Guest / Head Hunting

Event

Illustration: Mr Cuddington

Theme:Quantity
Vampire:2

Notes

You can use Celebrity Guest twice in one round if you have both copies of the Event card. The card illustration helps to make it clear that they are two different celebrities, so you can host both at your park at the same time.

Having two celebrities at the park at the same time isn't really ruining the "exclusive" when you compare it to sharing the ride with thousands of regular guests.

Of course, the downside to having so much value riding on one attraction, so to speak, is that you're very vulnerable to having that ride closed.

Instant Karma

Event

Illustration: Mr Cuddington

Theme:Quantity
Vampire:2

Notes

Your park must be affected in some measurable way before you can use Instant Karma in response. You cannot block an event from affecting you and use Instant Karma in response to it.

It creates a duplicate of the event that affected you, but not the choices made by the originating player. For example, if they chose to destroy a feature upgrade in your park, you are not required to choose a feature upgrade in response.

Simply treat it as if you are playing the original event and follow through whatever rules it has as normal.

The only requirement is that the choices you make must affect the originating player if it is possible to do so. If it is not possible, you may choose any other player.

If an additional cost was paid to use the original event, such as discarding a number of cards or tokens, your duplicate has that cost already paid, but you can't extend how much was paid. The size of the payment was determined before the event was put into play, and is not a decision of the event itself.

You can use Instant Karma on Instant Karma - you are effectively duplicating the original attacking event again.

If you have two copies of Instant Karma in hand at the same time, each of them may be used one after the other in response to the same original event, with different choices each time.

+ The Shakedown

You duplicate the whole ability of The Shakedown, not the result; it counts the Gangster Themes in your park, and may not be as lucrative.

+ Headhunting

You can choose to take back the staff member that was just taken from you, since after the original event that staff member is now in their park.

Karma was a difficult concept to illustrate, and in the end we focused more on the idea of instant payback, which is why the illustration references Spy vs. Spy, a wordless comic by Antonio Prohías, published in Mad Magazine, in which the characters frequently fall victim to their own schemes.

Effect moved to Events step.

Previously "Once per Park step: You may look at the top card of the City deck. This does not use an action."

Moving this effect to the Events step means you must wait until the next round after recruiting to use the ability, but also gives you more time in the round to adjust your choices based on your knowledge of the future, such as not playing Event cards that might be useful for defence.

Mesmerist

Staff Member

Illustration: Philippe Poirier

Theme:Quantity
Vampire:1

Notes

The mesmerism token is placed on the staff member as a way to test that they can be mesmerised. For example, Android Greeter and Pod Person cannot have tokens placed on them by the Mesmerist ability, so the mesmerism fails. Because the first part of the sentence fails, you ignore the remainder of the sentence, and cannot make the chosen staff member available or unavailable.

The presence of the token then prevents repeat mesmerism. The token is not removed at the end of the round - it stays in place indefinitely.

Being mesmerised to make a staff member available again doesn't reset that staff member's ability; if it is only allowed to be used once per round, and it has already used once that round, it's too late.

Updates

ShowHide

Revision II: card rule replaced.

Previously "Once per Events step: Choose a staff member without a mesmerism token in any park. Add a mesmerism token and move them to your park until the Cleanup step."

Previously "Once per Events step: You may choose a staff member in any park who has no mesmerism tokens. That staff member gains a mesmerism token and you get exclusive use of their abilities this round."

Even after being revised once, this guy's effect raised many questions. The fundamental problem is that control of a card is normally based on having that card in your park, and the Mesmerist tried to give control of the ability to another player, for use at their discretion at a later time, without actually giving the card to them.

The current revision provides a new ability not currently available anywhere else: to make a staff member available again once they have been made unavailable. Because it's an immediate change in state, there are no questions raised about ongoing control, such as what happens if someone steals or dismisses the Mesmerist.

We'd received questions about whether the super attractions are included in the attraction limit or not. The rulebook answered that, and it answers it even more emphatically now, but we also thought that putting the "Total attraction" limit last would help to make that clearer. Better to reprint only 6 cards now than change it later and need to reprint 10, or 14, or...
